MEET ACE:

Taylor Fernuik

By: Eliza Nowack

We live in a time where instant gratification is everything. With just a click of a button you can either go on a date, binge watch your favourite TV show or have your food delivered right to your doorstep. But despite our need for immediacy, there is one thing that has remained the same and that is exercise. If you want results, you need to put in the hours. Commitment and dedication continue to be key ingredients in living a healthy lifestyle. But it’s one thing to talk the talk and an entirely different thing to walk the walk. Enter Taylor Fernuik, a Kit and Ace buyer by day and a full time athlete outside the 9am – 5pm grind. It’s 8am and Taylor has already worked out not only once, but twice – what have you done? Needless to say, Taylor doesn’t just walk the walk, he runs it.

Before continuing to read, I’d like to issue you an advisory warning: please do not compare yourself to Taylor Fernuik as you might find yourself feeling apathetic as a result. That is not the intent of the article.

Each day Taylor’s alarm wakes him up at 5:15am and by 5:45am, he is at the gym. Because one workout simply doesn’t suffice, after the gym you’ll find Taylor sweating his way through spin class from 7am – 8am. He’s home by 8:05am with just enough time to enjoy 4 eggs and avocado before, dare I say, biking to work. I’d like to think Taylor as always been this way but to my surprise, quite the contrary. Despite being an elite sprinter in high school, he claims he was actually quite lazy. And it is because of this laziness that he “now overcompensates”. I wonder, has Taylor unlocked some hidden secret? Be lazy when you’re younger and you’ll flourish later on as an overly active adult? If only it were that easy. However, I think Taylor is failing to recognize that his hustle might just be in the Fernuik blood. A shoutout to his dad Neal, who according to Taylor, puts his daily schedule to shame. As us millennials like to say, I can’t even.

I asked Taylor how he relaxes and to no surprise whatsoever, he tells me he doesn’t. He’ll only watch TV after 10pm and seldom does he Netflix and chill. Okay Taylor, we get it – you’re an overachiever.

I found myself referencing the five stages of grief after listening to Taylor’s daily routine. At first, I was in complete denial but I eventually came around to accepting Taylor as an Adult prodigy. Despite any bitterness, I nonetheless feel inspired. And with that being said, the only thing I’ll be clicking on is a gym membership.
